Psychological health
Psychosocial hazards are work-related factors that have the potential to harm workers’ psychological health. These hazards typically arise from four key aspects of work including:
- design and management of work (e.g. unrealistic workloads or unclear roles)
- plant and equipment (e.g. poorly maintained tools or unsafe machinery)
- work environment (e.g. excessive noise, poor lighting or extreme temperatures)
- workplace relationships and behaviours (e.g. bullying, harassment or lack of support).
All industry obligation holders are responsible for managing risks to safety and health, including those related to psychosocial hazards. It is essential to ensure these risks are controlled to an acceptable level to protect workers’ psychological wellbeing.
Fatigue and psychosocial risks are closely linked and commonly experienced together — visit the fatigue page to understand more about fatigue.
