Required competencies for surface site senior executives - 5 years’ experience at a coal mine in operational or technical services activities that is mining, mechanical, electrical, processing or safety and health activities involved in coal mining, of which at least 2 years have been in a supervisory role, and
- 2 years of supervisory experience involved in the direct supervision of coal mine workers at a coal mine who undertake the mining, mechanical, electrical, processing or safety and health work involved in the extraction of coal, removal of overburden or exploration at a mine.
and
- Passed a statutory legislation exam administered by the Board of Examiners.

- RIIRIS601E (or equivalent) or MINE7033; or GMIRM.

Equivalent qualifications: Inherent in Section 55 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 is the obligation on the site senior executive to ensure that there is an auditable system to determine that other qualifications adopted, where allowed by the Committee, are equivalent to those recognised by the Committee.
