RSHQ to bring free mobile lung testing truck to former mine and quarry workers in Longreach
For the first time, the state’s resources safety regulator is bringing the HEART5 Mobile Health Unit to Longreach to offer free lung checks to former and retired Queensland mine and quarry workers.
Resources Safety and Health Queensland’s (RSHQ) Health Surveillance Unit Director Evan Pengelly said the checks helped detect work-related diseases that could often go unnoticed.
“HEART5 is a B-double filled with medical equipment to screen for mine dust lung diseases like silicosis, black lung, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),” he said.
“These diseases take time to develop – sometimes up to 10 years and with no symptoms – that’s why it’s so important to get tested even after you have left the industry.
“We’re proud to be expanding the HEART5 mobile lung checks for the very first time to Longreach on 2 June before heading to Mt Isa on 4-5 June.”
Screening includes:
- Examination with an RSHQ-approved doctor
- Chest X-ray
- Lung function test by spirometry
- CT scan (if required).
Since the program began, RSHQ has helped more than 2000 former mine and quarry workers across Queensland get screened either on the HEART5 mobile unit or at approved local clinics.
“Regardless of your age or how long it has been since you have worked in a mine or quarry, getting regular checks is an important way to stay healthy,” Mr Pengelly said.
“Bookings are essential, so give us a call on 1300 445 715 today to find out more.”
The program is available to former and retired mine and quarry workers in Queensland who have at least three years’ experience in mines or quarries including 6 months in a Queensland operation.
RSHQ offers the free lung check program in partnership with Heart of Australia, who operate the HEART5 mobile service. For more information, visit RSHQ’s website.
Upcoming HEART5 visits:
- Longreach – 2 June – Longreach Showgrounds, Langley Road, Longreach
- Mt Isa – 4-5 June – Mt Isa Showgrounds, George Street, Mount Isa.
