Number of former miners diagnosed with lung disease in Mackay revealed

14 March 2025

Figures from Resources Safety and Health Queensland have revealed one in ten former miners tested in Mackay have been diagnosed with a mine dust lung disease.

Since 2019, the HEART5 Mobile Health Unit and approved local clinics screened 312 former workers in Mackay and 32 were found to have contracted a lung disease from their time in the industry.

HEART5 is now returning to Mackay next week and former mine and quarry workers are encouraged to sign up for a free and lifechanging test.

HEART5 is a B-double truck packed full of medical screening equipment to test for mine dust lung diseases like silicosis, black lung, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which can come from working at mines or quarries.

It travels around the state run by Heart of Australia in partnership with Resources Safety and Health Queensland to deliver medical screenings that aren't always available in regional and rural areas.

"We're really proud to offer the services available on board HEART5," said RSHQ's Health Surveillance Unit Director Evan Pengelly.

"One in ten people being diagnosed with a disease shows that workers can contract a mine dust lung disease even after they have left the mining industry, and highlights just how vital these tests are to Queensland communities.

"Regular testing is a normal part of working at a mine or quarry, but once you leave the industry you can still get these important lung checks for free.

"People don't realise that many of these diseases start to develop without any symptoms and that's why we are constantly encouraging those who have left the industry - no matter their age - to sign up for a free lung check."

HEART5 will be stationed in Mackay at the Resources Centre of Excellence from Monday 24 March to Wednesday 26 March 2025.

Screening includes:

  • Examination with an RSHQ-approved doctor
  • Chest X-ray
  • Lung function test by spirometry
  • CT scan (if required)

The free lung check program is available to former and retired mine and quarry workers in Queensland, who have at least 3 years' experience working in coal and mineral mines or at quarries that includes 6 months in a Queensland operation.

Eligible former workers should call 1300 445 715 to book a spot on board the truck, or at an approved local clinic.
