Last chance for a free lung check in 2025!

14 November 2025

Former mine and quarry workers in Mackay will have one last chance to get a free lung check on board the HEART5 Mobile Health Unit before the year ends, when it visits in December.

HEART5 is visiting the Resources Centre of Excellence once again from Tuesday 2 - Thursday 4 December following a successful trip in March.

In 2025, the Mobile Health Unit has already delivered free lung checks in 11 different towns, in addition to free lung checks performed at approved local clinics across Queensland.

Since the truck began travelling across regional and remote Queensland, there have been more than 1300 former workers tested on board HEART5.

The Former Worker Program is run by the state's mining safety regulator, Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) in partnership with Heart of Australia.

RSHQ's Executive Director of Occupational Health Dean Barr is encouraging people to come forward before the holiday period begins.

"We know this is a busy time for everyone and the focus is not necessarily on our health, but a mine dust lung disease can be debilitating and often presents without symptoms early on," said Mr Barr.

"Tick off one more item on your 2025 to do list before the year ends, and book in for a free lung check.

"An early diagnosis can mean treatment and potentially compensation, so we encourage every former worker - whether they have symptoms or not - to come forward and get tested."

Screening includes:

  • Examination with an RSHQ-approved doctor
  • Chest X-ray
  • Lung function test by spirometry
  • CT scan (if required)

The free lung check program is available to former and retired mine and quarry workers in Queensland, who have at least 3 years' experience that includes 6 months in a Queensland operation.

Eligible former workers should call 1300 445 715 to find out more about getting a free lung health check on board the truck.
