1,509 fallen miners remembered in annual service

19 September 2024

Queensland miners who have died on the job were remembered in a service this morning as part of Miners Memorial Day.

Today marks the anniversary of the state's worst mining disaster where 75 workers died in a coal mine explosion at Mount Mulligan in 1921. There were no survivors.

The important event brings together people from across the industry including unions, the regulator, councillors, ministers, workers and their families.

RSHQ CEO Rob Djukic said Miners Memorial Day is an important reminder of why we must keep striving for a safer sector.

"Our focus at RSHQ is always on the safety of workers and that's never been more important than right now," said Mr Djukic.

"We've lost three workers this year which simply isn't good enough.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of Luke O'Brien, Chris Schloss, and John Linwood today and I'd like to reaffirm to them our commitment to a full and thorough investigation."

The Miners Memorial Day Service is run by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) each year, and this year it was held at the Collinsville-Scottville Workers Club in the Whitsunday region.

It also coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Collinsville coal mine disaster where seven men died in 1954.
