Petroleum and gas safety alert no. 62 | 04 June 2014 | Version 1

Safe installation and operating of inbuilt BBQs

How did it happen?

The contributing factors in a number of incidents include incorrect installation of the appliance, incorrect construction and lack of ventilation in the cabinetry, and the incorrect operation of the appliance. All of these can lead to a release of unburnt gas, which in the case of LP Gas, builds up in the cabinet below because it is heavier than air, resulting in an explosion.

Key issues

  • Appliances not approved or certified for installation in cabinetry or connection to a fixed gas system, especially in the case of LP Gas.
  • Cabinetry not constructed to adequately support the appliance and not providing the correct ventilation for combustion or allow unburnt gas to disperse.
  • Gas fuelled appliances, designed for outdoor use, are being located, installed and operated in areas other than outdoor locations.
  • Operating instructions, precautions and warnings not being read prior to operating the appliance.

Recommendations

  1. All gas installation work must be carried out by a qualified and licensed gasfitter.
  2. Prior to installation of an appliance, carefully read the manufacturer's assembly, installation and operating instructions.
  3. Prior to use, read precautions and warnings provided by the manufacturer to familiarise yourself with safety requirements for safe use of the appliance.
  4. Ensure all gas cocks are turned off before turning main gas supply on.
  5. Do not store any flammable materials (spare LP Gas cylinders, cleaning chemicals) in the vicinity of gas fuelled appliances.

For your safety: If you smell gas:

  • Shut off the gas to the appliance and extinguish any open flames.
  • Do not use or activate any potential ignition source (for example phones, cameras, lights).
  • Ventilate the area (open the lid and cabinet doors).
  • If you continue to smell gas contact the fire department and your gas supplier/installer.

Investigations are ongoing and further information may be published as it becomes available. The information in this publication is what is known at the time of writing.

We issue Safety Notices to draw attention to the occurrence of a serious incident, raise awareness of risks, and prompt assessment of your existing controls.

There has been rapid growth in the popularity of alfresco dining and entertaining areas, and as a result an increase in the variety of associated gas fuelled appliances available. The Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate is concerned by the number of incidents relating to gas fuelled appliances installed in these locations, especially when supplied by LP Gas through a fixed installation.
