Explosives important notice no. 15 | 19 July 2012 | Version 1
Using explosives for target practice is illegal
It has come to the attention of the Explosives Inspectorate that some Queensland shooters are using products containing explosives for target practice. One such product is marketed under the trade name Tannerite®.
Tannerite includes ingredients that are classed as explosives—and it is illegal in Queensland to use explosives for target practice. This product, when activated, has the ability to produce heat, projections and overpressure.
Claims by some sellers that such products are legal are quite false. It is illegal in Queensland to buy, sell or possess these products. Not even holders of a weapons licence may use them. No-one can have them for any reason whatsoever.
There are also restrictions on transporting these products—consigners are liable for prosecution—and it is illegal to manufacture them.
Do not attempt to manufacture them
Be aware that demonstrations and recipes for the manufacture of explosives come with grave risks. People have suffered terrible injuries and brought much unnecessary suffering on their families by attempting to manufacture these dangerous materials in uncontrolled conditions.
Penalties apply
Penalties up to $40,000 or six months imprisonment apply to anyone illegally possessing or manufacturing explosives in Queensland. There are heavier penalties when a person's safety, health or property is endangered.
Most state regulators have similar requirements, so if you don't live in Queensland you should check with your local authority.
