Check flooded gas equipment to avoid an explosion

04 February 2025

Queensland's gas safety regulator, Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), is warning locals affected by floods in North and Far North Queensland to check their gas equipment for water damage.

RSHQ's Chief Inspector of Petroleum and Gas Shoena Messner said damaged gas appliances can lead to explosions.

"Gas equipment that's been damaged by winds or immersed in water can be deadly," said Ms Messner.

"When there's water laying in a pipe it can also lead to combustion and produce large quantities of carbon-monoxide which is incredibly dangerous.

"Flood-affected Queenslanders should contact their gas supplier if any gas meters, regulators or LP gas cylinders have been damaged or dislodged."

All gas systems damaged by flooding should only be checked by a licensed gas fitter before gas can be restored safely.

RSHQ's tips for gas safety during a flood:

  • Move gas bottles to higher ground: If safe to do so, relocate cylinders away from flood-prone areas. Secure them in an upright position away from floodwaters.
  • If gas bottles get flooded, don’t use them: Water damage can be deadly. Call a licensed gasfitter for an inspection.
  • Leave gas repairs to the experts: Always get a professional to check for leaks or damage before reconnecting gas.
  • Use portable gas appliances safely: If relying on gas cookers or heaters, follow instructions, use them outdoors, check for leaks and turn them off when not in use.
  • Dispose of gas cylinders correctly: Don’t put them in general waste. Contact your LPG supplier or local council for proper disposal.
