Petroleum and gas safety alert no. 74 | 31 March 2017 | Version 1
Following a number of complaints received regarding imported caravans, subsequent inspections carried-out by Petroleum and Gas Inspectors identified that a number of imported caravans have been offered for sale in Australia without the gas system being approved (certified).
In Queensland, the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (the Act) requires that the supply, installation and use of gas devices (and fittings) must be approved. For example, appliances and fittings must be approved by an approval body and any gas work carried out must only be undertaken by the holder of a current gas work licence (GWL).
The approval and certification processes ensure that gas systems in caravans, campervans and recreational vehicles comply with the relevant Australian Standards and are safe to use.
Approved appliances carry a label identifying the approving body and the relevant approval number. Appliances should also be accompanied by manufacturer's instructions that provide specific guidance on their safe use. Read more about correct labelling of approved appliances.

Investigations are ongoing and further information may be published as it becomes available. The information in this publication is what is known at the time of writing.
We issue Safety Notices to draw attention to the occurrence of a serious incident, raise awareness of risks, and prompt assessment of your existing controls.
