Skidding and sliding on mine roads
A recent increase in incidents involving uncontrolled vehicle movement on open-cut coal mine roads is raising serious concerns.
Some of the increase in incidents may be due to improved reporting, however the concern is, an increased potential of an accident with the large number of both light and heavy vehicle interactions on mine roads.
The Mines Inspectorate has released a number of safety alerts and bulletins over the last five years on the risks of uncontrolled movements. As there has been considerable turnover of senior positions in supervision and mine planning, the following table aims to support mine site review of the adequacy of controls.

Presentations provided at an industry workshop - Mine Road Design, Construction and Maintenance Practices with a focus on Controlling Uncontrolled Movements of Vehicles at Surface Coal Mines held in Rockhampton on 31 May 2011, gave additional information that may assist mine operations.
Mines Inspectors will be reviewing the adequacy and effectiveness of critical controls to manage sliding and skidding where water contributed uncontrolled movements.
