Board of Inquiry into recent incidents in Queensland coal mining
The Queensland Government is committed to ensuring the mining industry is a safe industry for all workers.
On 6 May 2020, an incident occurred at the Grosvenor underground coal mine, near Moranbah which resulted in 5 coal mine workers receiving serious injuries.
Under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999, the Minister has established a Board of Inquiry into the circumstances and cause of this incident, and a number of other high potential incidents involving longwall-related methane exceedances that have occurred in Queensland’s coal mining industry since July 2019.
The Board of Inquiry process provides an opportunity for Government to seek an independent and comprehensive inquiry into the nature and cause of the incident, in order to identify lessons and make recommendations for industry and Government.
The inquiry will report its findings to the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy by 30 November 2020.
